Where to file a Philadelphia police misconduct suit.
The incident at issue involved allegations that Philadelphia police officers beat a suspect. When their further investigation cleared him of the initial criminal allegations, they left him on the street without arresting him or transporting him for medical treatment. There were officers on the scene who did not participate in the beating, but merely stood by without intervening. The proposed plaintiff suffered bruises, contusions, abrasions and broken teeth. He took himself to the hospital, where he was treated and released. He did not have medical insurance and did not receive follow-up treatment. His injuries have resolved, other than his teeth.
Marissa’s Story
Four year old Marissa really needed a preschool. Her mother, Evelyn, was struggling with intensive treatment for breast cancer and her father had a chronic, progressive disease that required him to use a wheelchair. Yatvin defeats certiorari in U.S. Supreme Court, preserves special education victory
Emily’s parents then hired Popper & Yatvin partner Alan Yatvin to represent them. Yatvin filed an administrative complaint with the Pennsylvania Office of Dispute Resolution, requesting reimbursement for Emily’s tuition, along with transportation to Benchmark. Following a three day hearing, the Pennsylvania Special Education Hearing Officer ruled on April 21, 2009, that the school district had failed to offer Emily an appropriate educational program, and ordered the school district to pay Emily’s tuition and provide her transportation.
Mayor names Yatvin to Philadelphia Police Community Oversight Board
On April 17, 2015, Philadelphia Mayor Michael A. Nutter named Popper & Yatvin partner Alan L. Yatvin to the newly created Police Community Oversight Board. The Board was established by the Mayor by Executive Order No. 1-15, in response to the United States Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policy Services (DOJ-COPS) report entitled, “Collaborative Reform Initiative: An Assessment of Deadly Force Policy and Practice in the Philadelphia Police Department” and the Interim Report of the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing.
Yatvin named to Board of Directors of the American Diabetes Association
Popper & Yatvin partner Alan L. Yatvin has been elected to a three year term as one of the 18 members of the National Board of Directors of the American Diabetes Association (ADA).

Yatvin on ethics panel in The Hague
Program attendees included ADC-ICTY members, interns and staff, as well as defence team members from the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL), staff of the ICTY/ICTR/MICT Registry, Prosecution and Chambers, and students from various universities around The Hague. At the ADC’s General Assembly on November 9th, Alan was elected to his 5th term as chair of the ADC-ICTY Membership Committee.
